Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month – MAN v FAT

This week marked the start of Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States, a celebration of the contributions and influence of Hispanic culture to the nation’s achievements, culture, and history.

Undoubtedly, Hispanic culture has played a big part of the successes of MAN v FAT Soccer in its first year, with a range of nationalities represented across our leagues in Florida, New York City and Texas.

As this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month gets into full swing, we caught up with Danny Ocano, one of our MAN v FAT South Miami members.

Danny, a 50 year old father of six and grandfather of one, has been married for 24 years and, after some recent health concerns, decided MAN v FAT offered a great solution.

He gave us the lowdown about Hispanic Heritage Month and much more!

1) Please can you tell our audience – especially those in the UK – about Hispanic Heritage Month, and how you celebrate it there?

Hispanic Heritage month recognizes the history, culture, and significant contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to our nation. The observance coincides with the independence days of several Latin American countries and aims to honor the achievements and impact of people from Spanish-speaking backgrounds. The month serves as a time to celebrate the rich diversity of Hispanic and Latino cultures, from their traditions in family and food to their roles in literature, arts, activism, and more.

2) Tell us a bit more about your own heritage and how important it is to you and your identity

Honduran culture is a rich blend of Indigenous, Spanish, and African influences, marked by a strong emphasis on family, community-focused festivals, and vibrant music and dance, particularly the energetic punta style. The culture is characterized by warm, friendly people who value loyalty, especially to family. Traditional cuisine features staples like beans, rice, and tortillas, while religious traditions, especially Catholic observances like Holy Week, are central to community life – our country holds communities from all walks of life and socioeconomic positions.

Soccer or better known as Futbol, enjoys immense popularity in our community due to its accessibility, cultural significance, and unifying spirit. Firstly, soccer requires minimal equipment—a ball and an open space—making it easy for people of all ages and backgrounds to participate, so whether you are a 3rd world country, or a global power anyone can enjoy, especially among youth.

Secondly, our community’s diverse population, with roots in countries where soccer is a cultural cornerstone, brings a deep passion for the sport, passed down through generations and celebrated during global events like the World Cup. As a child I played in the dirt in the sand in the grass,  as I grew I played for schools,  community College, then as a parent I taught and coached the game. Soccer runs in our blood.

4) How have you found your experience on the program so far?

I’m deeply grateful for this incredible weight loss program, which not only helped me shed some pounds but it is also bringing people together,  amazing camaraderie and team-building experiences. The support and connection with everyone involved is making my journey truly rewarding! I have been on a health decline as of late, little to no energy, and this program has given me the motivation to not give up but to fight.

5) What has it been like meeting men like you on the program and how has your league community evolved?

Meeting other men working on weight loss has been eye-opening. We’re all navigating similar challenge – balancing work, family, and fitness while fighting cravings and old habits. What we share is a drive for better health, whether it’s to keep up with kids, boost confidence, or just feel better day-to-day. Most guys I’ve connected with find accountability helps, like sharing tips on quick workouts or meal preps that don’t suck. We also bond over the mental side – pushing through plateaus and staying consistent even when life gets hectic. It’s less about competition and more about having each other’s backs.

6) Which soccer teams do you support and how often do you get to follow your national team?

I represent my city and my country. I follow most on line or on TV when possible…can’t really afford those World Cup ticket prices!

My teams: Inter Miami with cheat code Messi, Honduras national team, US women’s & men’s National teams. Going across the pond you find Manchester City, a fan since 1999. Finally because of my grandfather I hold a special place in my closet and heart for Brazil & Germany.

Outside of soccer I represent Miami Dade County… Dolphins, Hurricanes, Heat, Marlins & Panthers.

Hey guys, if you’re thinking about getting healthier, I can’t recommend our ManVFat program enough. It’s not just about dropping weight—it’s about feeling stronger, sharper, and more energized for life. When I started, I was skeptical, and insecure, but what hooked me was the real, practical system and camaraderie.

We share tips, laugh about the occasional pizza slip-up, and keep each other on track. It’s a judgment-free zone where we celebrate every step forward, whether it’s losing a few pounds or just feeling better in your own skin. Join us, and let’s make getting healthy something you’ll actually enjoy! JUDGEMENT FREE ZONE.

A huge thanks to Danny for his time in putting this together – and, equally, a big thanks to our guys across MAN v FAT Soccer for building some incredible communities!
