Easy Week – BionicOldGuy

This was an easy training week because we went down south for a wedding over the weekend so I took a couple of days off from riding. I still got a couple of hard days of riding in with sprints and intervals, as well as two days of upper body training.

The wedding was our friend’s daughter who we’ve known and loved since she was a toddler. The bride and groom bought a house on a good sized lot with a very nice setting in their backyard in Woodland Hills, and that is where the ceremony and reception were held. It was a beautiful ceremony, the first Jewish wedding I’ve attended, and we had a nice time at the reception. The weekend wasn’t quite perfect, because of some travel woes. Neither my wife or I have been doing too much walking lately aside from activities of daily living but this trip required a lot. First we had to park very far from the terminal in San Jose, then it turns out that at Burbank airport there’s a long walk from the terminal to where you pick up rental cars. Even if you’re in decent shape doing a lot of an activity you’re not accustomed to can lead to soreness, and sure enough I got shin splints and my wife a sore leg, but we’re better after a few days.

On the way back we were a bit behind schedule getting to the airport. It didn’t help that google maps messed up: I searched for “bur” which it should recognize as an airport code, instead it took us to a train station near the airport. Recovering from that mistake, then again needing to do the long walk from the rental car drop-off to the terminal meant it would be tight getting through security on time. But it turned out our flight was delayed anyway. A 10 minute delay would have been perfect but it ended up being an hour. After that things went smoothly. In hindsight this was all a minor glitch, well worth it to see Nikki’s wedding.

I got back to easy biking on Monday then went on a long one with my group up into the hills southwest of Morgan Hill. We had some new riders who had not been out there before and it was nice to see their reaction to the scenery.

Next week I’m going to try bumping up my upper body training to 3 days instead of 2, since I’ve been tolerating my 2 day program well. We’ll see how that goes.

or glitch in the grand scheme of things.
